Best SUV for Northeast Hill Roads: An Honest Comparison

Crysta vs Scorpio-N vs XUV700 on Sela Pass, Cherrapunji curves and monsoon gravel — from someone who maintains all three.

Innova Crysta — the group choice

Best ride quality of the three and the least tiring over 12-hour days. Seven people plus luggage fit properly. It is not a 4x4, but on the Tawang route the road is paved or hard-packed almost throughout, so traction is rarely the limiting factor.

Scorpio-N — the value pick

More ground clearance than the Crysta and strong low-end diesel torque for steep hairpins. Slightly firmer ride. If your route includes Meghalaya monsoon roads or unpaved village stretches, this is our default recommendation.

XUV700 — the loaded pick

Diesel automatic with seven seats and a panoramic moonroof, so nobody misses the view on Sela Pass. The easiest of the three to drive all day, and the one we hand over most often to first-time hill drivers.

What matters more than the badge

Tyre condition, a checked spare, working brakes and a driver who is not tired. We walk through all four with you at handover — ask us to show you.
