How to book a Kaziranga safari

Safaris are booked separately from your car. Your rental takes you to the range gate; inside the park you ride in a registered safari jeep or on an elephant.

  • 1. Pick a range

Jeep safaris run in all four ranges: Kohora (Central), Bagori (Western), Agaratoli (Eastern) and Burapahar. Kohora is about 193 km from Guwahati; Bagori and Burapahar come before it on NH-27, and Agaratoli is further east.

  • 2. Book online in advance

The Assam government's Sewa Setu portal offers online safari booking for Kaziranga with a valid mobile number. Book early for weekends and holidays, then carry the confirmation and photo ID to the range gate.

  • 3. Jeep or elephant

A jeep safari covers more ground and suits most visitors. Elephant safaris are a separate, shorter early-morning activity with limited seats — confirm availability and the range when you book, as it is not offered on every slot.

  • 4. Time the drive

Ranges open in phases each season, usually from October, and close for the monsoon. Check which range and slot are open before you fix travel dates, and reach the gate a little before your slot.

Safari fees, slots and opening dates are set by the park and change each season. Adventure Cars does not sell safari tickets; confirm the current details when you book.

When to visit Kaziranga

The park opens for safaris in the dry season and closes during the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods much of the grassland.

  • Open season: roughly October/November to April/May

Ranges usually reopen in phases from October, with full safari operations typically from November, and close around May for the monsoon. Exact opening and closing dates are announced by the park each year.

  • November to February: cool and dry

Pleasant days and cold, often foggy mornings — pack a warm layer for early safaris. This is the busiest period, so book safaris and stays early for weekends and holidays.

  • March to April: warmer, better visibility

Tall elephant grass is often burnt or cut back after winter, which tends to make rhinos, buffalo and deer easier to spot near open water. Afternoons get hot; morning slots are more comfortable.

  • May to September: monsoon closure

Heavy rain and floods close the core park to tourist safaris. NH-27 stays open, but expect wildlife crossings, slow traffic and flood-related speed limits near the park.

  • Elephant safaris

Run only in the early morning, with limited seats, and not in every range or on every day. Availability changes by season, so confirm it when you book rather than planning a trip around it.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and seasonal dates, slots and fees are set by the park authority. Check current details on the official booking portal before fixing your travel dates.

Road conditions

NH-27 is mostly four-lane and fast. Watch for village crossings near Nagaon and cattle on the road near the park boundary at dusk.

Permits & paperwork

No travel permit. Safari permits are issued at the range gates — Kohora (Central) fills up fastest.

Guwahati to Kaziranga: common questions

Guwahati to Kaziranga National Park (Kohora, Central Range) is about 193 km by road on NH-27 via Nagaon. The highway is mostly four-lane, which makes it one of the easiest road trips from Guwahati.

Usually 4 to 4.5 hours. Start early if you want an afternoon jeep safari on arrival, and avoid driving near the park boundary late at night.

With Adventure Cars, a car with driver for this route starts from ₹4,800 per day and a self-drive car from ₹3,000 per day, with 400 km included and ₹10/km beyond that. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates for an exact quote.

Guwahati to Kohora and back is about 386 km, which fits within the 400 km included per rental day. Safari drives happen in park jeeps, so they add little to your car's distance. Extra km beyond the allowance are ₹10/km.

The park is usually open from November to April and closed for the monsoon from mid-May to October. Safari permits are issued at the range gates; Kohora (Central) fills up fastest.

Kaziranga is in central Assam, on the south bank of the Brahmaputra, spread across Golaghat and Nagaon districts. Its main gate at Kohora sits on NH-27, about 193 km east of Guwahati.

By road is simplest: NH-27 east via Nagaon to Kohora, about 4–4.5 hours. Guwahati's LGBI Airport and railway station are the usual arrival points; we can hand over a self-drive car or send a car with driver there.

Entry, jeep and elephant safari fees are set by the park and revised by season and visitor category, so we do not quote them. Check the current fees on the official Kaziranga National Park website before you travel.

No. NH-27 is a good highway and safaris use park jeeps, so a sedan or hatchback is fine. An SUV like the Creta or XUV700 adds comfort for families and luggage.

Yes. We hand over cars at LGBI Airport and Guwahati Railway Station, and from the airport you take the NH-27 bypass around the city rather than driving through the centre. Kohora is roughly 215 km from the airport, about 4.5–5 hours. Share your flight or train details on WhatsApp and we will time the handover.

NH-27 is mostly four-lane highway, so self-drive is easy here — the main cautions are village crossings near Nagaon and cattle near the park boundary at dusk. A car with driver helps if you want dawn safaris without driving before sunrise. Both options include 400 km per day.

Two to three days is ideal: arrive on day one, take a dawn elephant safari and an afternoon jeep safari on day two, and return on day three via Nagaon. Morning safaris start at 5:30 AM, so staying near Kohora gate the night before matters.

The per-day rate includes the car and 400 km per day — the Guwahati–Kaziranga round trip is about 386 km, so most trips stay within the allowance. Extra kilometres are ₹10/km. A refundable ₹2,000 token confirms the booking, and self-drive rentals carry a refundable deposit equal to one day's rate. Fuel, tolls, parking and safari permits are paid by you.

The highway is easy, so any car works. Couples do fine in the Hyundai Creta; families of 5–7 prefer the Mahindra XUV700 or Toyota Innova Crysta for luggage space. Groups of 9–17 can travel together in the Force Urbania with driver.

Yes — a common plan is Kaziranga first (2–3 days on NH-27), then back past Guwahati and up to Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki (3 days). One rental covers the whole trip, and the park's November-to-April season also suits Meghalaya's clear-weather months.
