Guwahati to Gangtok Road Trip
The longest single-day drive we rent for, and the only one that ends with Kanchenjunga filling your windscreen at sunrise. Most of it is flat highway through lower Assam and North Bengal — the character arrives in the last 100 km, where NH-10 hugs the Teesta river gorge all the way up to Gangtok. Break it at Siliguri unless you are leaving Guwahati before 5 AM; the Teesta stretch after dark is not worth the saved hotel night.
Guwahati to Gangtok distance & travel time
Guwahati to Gangtok is about 590 km by road: roughly 470 km of flat NH-27 through Bongaigaon to Siliguri, then 120 km up NH-10 along the Teesta gorge. Plan 12 to 13 hours and break the journey at Siliguri unless you leave Guwahati before 5 AM — the Teesta stretch after dark is not worth the saved hotel night.

Bongaigaon · ~180 km from Guwahati
Mid-Assam halt for fuel and food on the long NH-27 run.
Siliguri · ~470 km from Guwahati
The recommended night halt — last big city for fuel, ATMs and supplies before the hills.
Rangpo · ~550 km from Guwahati
Sikkim entry gate. Keep the RC, insurance and rental agreement together for the entry formality.
Gangtok · ~590 km from Guwahati
Base for MG Marg, Rumtek Monastery and permitted day trips to Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La.
Road conditions
Long but easy running on NH-27 through Bongaigaon and Siliguri, then the NH-10 climb along the Teesta beside sheer rock cuttings. NH-10 is the one stretch that genuinely worries us in monsoon — landslide closures near Rangpo and Singtam are common between June and September, and traffic is held single-file while crews clear the road.
Permits & paperwork
No Inner Line Permit for Indian travellers entering Sikkim. Protected Area Permits apply only to specific high-altitude zones beyond Gangtok — Nathu La, Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim — and those are issued to registered local operators, so plan to park the rental in Gangtok and take a permitted local vehicle for that leg.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1
Guwahati → Siliguri (470 km) on NH-27, overnight stop.
Day 2
Siliguri → Gangtok (120 km) along the Teesta, afternoon at MG Marg.
Day 3
Tsomgo Lake / Nathu La by permitted local vehicle, Rumtek Monastery.
Day 4
Gangtok → Siliguri → Guwahati, or split the return again at Bongaigaon.
Local tips from our drivers
- Check NH-10 status before leaving Siliguri in monsoon — closures are announced the same morning.
- Sikkim bans single-use plastic water bottles in several zones; carry a refillable one.
- Vehicles need a Sikkim entry formality at Rangpo — keep the RC, insurance and rental agreement together.
- Fuel up at Siliguri or Rangpo; pumps thin out on the climb.
