Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip
The Northeast's greatest drive. Two days each way, one high pass, and a monastery above the clouds. This is the route we get asked about most — and the one where the right vehicle matters most.
Guwahati to Tawang distance & travel time
Guwahati to Tawang is about 448 km by road via Tezpur, Bhalukpong, Bomdila and Dirang, then through the Sela Tunnel (opened March 2024) below Sela Pass. Plan 12 to 14 hours of driving split over two days — Dirang is the usual night halt. The tunnel shortens the Dirang–Tawang stretch by roughly 10 km, but mountain traffic, roadworks, landslides and snow decide the real time, so treat these figures as estimates and keep a buffer day.

Stops along the way
Tezpur · ~180 km from Guwahati
Last big Assam town on the way — fuel, ATMs and a good lunch halt before the hills.
Bhalukpong · ~240 km from Guwahati
Assam–Arunachal border. Your Inner Line Permit is checked here; keep printed copies ready.
Dirang · ~380 km from Guwahati
The recommended night halt — a riverside valley town with hot springs and decent stays.
Sela Tunnel / Sela Pass · ~430 km from Guwahati
The all-weather tunnel runs below the 13,700 ft pass; the old pass road is a viewpoint stop. Fill fuel at Dirang and aim to cross by early afternoon, as mountain weather turns fast.
Tawang · ~448 km from Guwahati
Base for the monastery, Pankang Teng Tso lake and the Bum La Pass excursion (separate permit).
Road conditions
Smooth till Bhalukpong, then a long mountain ascent through Bomdila and Dirang to the Sela Tunnel (opened 2024) below Sela Pass (13,700 ft). Some sections are gravel and landslide-prone. High clearance and a diesel engine are strongly recommended.
Permits & paperwork
Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for Arunachal Pradesh — apply online at the state e-ILP portal or collect at Bhalukpong. Carry printed copies plus ID for every traveller.

Guwahati to Tawang: common questions
Plan 12 to 14 hours of actual driving for about 448 km, split over two days with a night at Dirang (or Bomdila). Driving it in one day is not advisable — the hill section after Bhalukpong is slow and night driving in the mountains is risky.
Roughly 180 km to Tezpur, 240 km to Bhalukpong at the Arunachal border, 380 km to Dirang and 448 km to Tawang. Day one usually ends at Dirang; day two covers about 70 km of mountain road to Tawang, with time for stops.
Yes, a little. The Sela Tunnel, opened in March 2024, bypasses the top of Sela Pass and shortens the road by about 10 km, and it keeps the route open in winter more reliably. It does not change the overall plan — Guwahati to Tawang is still a two-day drive.

Yes. An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for Arunachal Pradesh. Apply online at the state e-ILP portal or collect it at Bhalukpong, and carry printed copies plus photo ID for every traveller. Bum La Pass needs a separate local permit arranged in Tawang.
With Adventure Cars, a car with driver for this route starts from ₹5,400 per day and a self-drive SUV from ₹3,800 per day, with 400 km included per day and ₹10/km beyond that. A Tawang round trip is roughly 900 km over 5 or more days, so message us on WhatsApp for an exact quote.
This is the one route where we gently push the driver option. The Sela Pass stretch is gravel, landslide-prone and above 13,000 ft, and altitude slows reactions. Experienced mountain drivers do self-drive in a diesel SUV; everyone else enjoys the trip more with our driver.
Five days is the comfortable minimum: two driving days up, two in Tawang (monastery, lakes, Bum La), and the return leg. Add a buffer day in monsoon or winter for pass closures.
