10 Places Worth Driving To Near Guwahati
12 February 2026 · 7 min read

From Chandubi lake to Cherrapunji's waterfalls — the drives we recommend most often, with honest travel times.
Within 3 hours of Guwahati
Shillong (100 km) is the obvious one, but Chandubi Lake (65 km), Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (50 km, highest rhino density in the world) and Hajo–Sualkuchi (35 km, silk weaving) all make comfortable half-day drives. A hatchback is plenty for all four.
Weekend distance
Kaziranga (193 km), Cherrapunji (148 km), Dawki and Mawlynnong (175 km) and Nameri (220 km) are all doable Friday-to-Sunday. Take a 7-seater if you are four or more — luggage matters more than engine size on these roads.
The long ones
Tawang (448 km) and Kohima (345 km) need four days minimum and an Inner Line Permit. Book a diesel SUV, start early each day, and never plan a mountain pass crossing in the afternoon.
How to pick
Match the vehicle to the road, not to the budget. Highway trips to Kaziranga are happiest in a sedan; anything climbing past 5,000 ft is happiest with ground clearance and torque.
